Cortisol is a hormone that regulates the fight or flight mechanism that is designed to save us from a physical threat. Basically, when the body is stressed, cortisol bumps up your blood pressure and speeds up carbohydrate and fat metabolism. This increases the blood sugar to help feed the muscles so they can function better while stressed.
When we are stressed the demand for blood sugar, caused by cortisol, causes us to feel hungry, in turn, making us eat more. This problem can be exacerbated if we drink coffee. This is true because caffeine prompts cortisol production.
So if you are stressed and trying to lose weight, cortisol can be your worst enemy. Don’t give it a fighting chance by drinking coffee on top of it.
