Festival of Sleep Day is celebrated today, January 3rd, and with the major holidays over, this holiday is a great reminder that we all need to get a restful night’s sleep. To celebrate, you can learn about and experience how good it feels to have a restful night’s sleep. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier to see if you feel more rested, or go shopping for a new pillow or mattress to assist you in getting a more restful night’s sleep.
Sleep as defined by Dorland’s Medical Dictionary for Health Consumers is “a period of rest for the body and mind, during which volition and consciousness are in abeyance and bodily functions are partially suspended,” and most experts agree that getting 7-8 hours of sleep is essential. People who deprive themselves of sleep are more susceptible to memory problems, weaker immune systems, hormone imbalances which can lead to overeating, and elevated levels of inflammation in the body which can be a risk factor for stroke and heart diseases.
