MRSA Statistics

The following data summary below was presented in the article “Invasive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections in the United States” published in the Journal of the American Medical Association 2007;298(15):1763-1771.

In 2005, the estimated number of people developing a serious MRSA infection was just over 94,000, and of those serious MRSA infections 18,650 people died

Serious MRSA infection is still predominantly related to exposures to healthcare settings.  Around 85% of all serious MRSA infections were associated with healthcare settings.  In addition, overall rates of infection were highest among people 65 and older, African Americans, and males.
