Recurrent Yeast Infection

Yeast is a fungus and can exist harmlessly in the human body. However, recurrent yeast infections may be an indication that your immune system is compromised due to HIV. In addition, Diabetes and/or insulin resistance is considered to be a major cause of recurrent yeast infections. Other causes of recurrent yeast infections include oral contraceptive pills, and overuse of antibiotics.

If you are having recurrent yeast infections it is a good idea to find out the cause. Getting your glucose checked and knowing your HIV status are two good places to start. Also, it is a good idea to follow these prevention suggestions:

  • Avoid pantyhose and tight pants which can trap moisture
  • After exercise make sure to remove moisture
  • Wear loose, all cotton underwear
  • Wipe front to back after going to the bathroom
  • Use tampons instead of pads
  • Do not shave the pubic region
  • Avoid all chemicals in the pubic region
