Deep breathing has been shown to lower stress. In fact, it may be one of the best ways to lower stress. This is because it sends a message to your brain that in turn sends a message to your body to relax. Symptoms of stress including increased heart rate and high blood pressure are likely to decrease when deep breathing is done regularly.
The best way to get started is simply become more aware of your breathing. Focus on how the air passing through your nose feels, and a few times a day, stop and take some deep breaths. I recommend taking at least five slow deep breaths in a row. Inhale for four seconds and exhale for four seconds. If you are feeling stressed, this would be the perfect time to practice.
Yoga and Breathing Exercises can be used to help you get in touch with your breathing as well, and will help to make deep breathing a more natural process. I will discuss this more in depth tomorrow.
