Information

What is a CBC?
A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is a blood test used to screen overall health and can detect a wide range of blood disorders, including anemia, leukemia and infection.

The CBC is part of our Essential and Essential Plus Screening Panels.

What is included in a CBC?
A Complete Blood Count (CBC) will check the following:

  • White Blood Cell Count (WBC)
  • Red Blood Cell Count (RBC)
  • Red Cell Distribution Width
  • White Blood Cell Differential
  • Hemoglobin
  • Mean Corpuscular Volume
  • Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin
  • Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration
  • Platelet Count

Testing

Why should I get tested?
If you want a general health screening or are having symptoms such as fatigue or weakness you may want to get a CBC.

How should I prepare for the test?
A CBC Test does not require any special preparation.

Results

What could my screening results mean?
A high WBC (White Blood Cell Count) may indicate an infection is present in the body or, less commonly, it may be a sign of cancer. A low WBC count may point toward a bone marrow disorder or could be related to certain medications.

A low RBC (Red Blood Cell Count) or low hemoglobin may suggest anemia, which can have numerous causes. Possible reasons for a high red blood cell count or hemoglobin may include bone marrow disease or low blood oxygen levels.

A low platelet count may be the cause of prolonged bleeding. On the other hand, a high platelet count may point toward a bone marrow disorders or severe inflammation.

Many conditions will result in increases or decreases in the cell populations. Some of these conditions may require treatment, while others will resolve on their own. If a CBC test indicates abnormalities, you should consult your healthcare provider for further analysis.
