Information

What is a Lipid Panel?
A Lipid Panel is a blood test that measures lipids-fats and fatty substances used as a source of energy by your body. Lipids include cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). A Lipid Panel may also be referred to as a Cholesterol Test or Lipid Profile.

The Lipid Panel is part of our Essential and Essential Plus Screening Panels.

What is included in a Lipid Panel?
A Lipid Panel will check the following:

  • Total cholesterol level
  • Triglyceride level
  • HDL Cholesterol level (good cholesterol)
  • LDL cholesterol level (bad cholesterol)
  • Cholesterol Ratios

Testing

Why should I get tested?
It is recommended that adults age 20 or older should get a Lipid Panel once every five years. Ideally, testing should begin when you are relatively healthy.

A Lipid Panel test is also recommended if you are overweight, get little to no exercise, have diabetes, eat foods high in fat, or if you have a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease.

How should I prepare for the test?
You should avoid food and liquids (with the exception of water) for 8-12 hours prior to getting a Lipid Panel.

Results

What could my screening results mean?
Higher levels of HDL protects against heart disease, while lower levels can increase your risk of developing heart disease, particularly if you also have high total cholesterol levels. High LDL or total cholesterol can increases your risk of developing heart disease, and patients that have an increased risk for heart attacks need to be especially mindful of their LDL levels.

Many conditions can affect your Lipid Panel results. If your Lipid Panel indicates abnormalities, you should consult your healthcare provider for further analysis.
